Jermaine woke several hours later in a fiercely foul mood. He showered quickly, dressed, ordered coffee to go, and made his way into Old Town. He wandered the alleys, photographing buildings that caught his eye, but couldn’t shake his own guilt.
Eventually, he ascended the stairs into a vacant structure and sat leaning against a wall, steeling himself as he retrieved his phone and dialed Vera’s number.
It rang several times before she anwered. He visualized her glaring at the phone while she considered ignoring it. Her irate voice conveyed that she had checked the Caller ID.
“Yeah, what,” Vera shrieked into the receiver.
“Hi, honey,” Jermaine greeted her with mock cheer and monitored calculation of just how guilty he sounded, “How are you,” he asked, instantly regretting it. His nerves frayed to nil as he waited through a long, sub-zero silence.
“Had you wanted to know, you would have called back after checking in! I’ve been on my deathbed for three days!”
“Vera-baby,” he hedged, “I’m sorry! When I checked in, my phone was dead and it was too late to call by the time I found a charger. I know you have been terribly ill.”
Vera paced the floor considering his argument and decided to be the shrew that made his voice tremble, “So your phone took seventy-two hours to charge and you got the only hotel room in Spain that has no phone? Sure! That’s completely plausible, sweetheart! Who is the little tart,” she queried venomously.
Suddenly, it was her turn to be greeted with silence. Jermaine debated coming clean, but nothing was certain yet. He didn’t want to risk losing Vera if his naked beauty could turn him away.
He palmed the ring absentmindedly and lied, “I’ve been running day and night trying to arrange the photoshoot, baby. I’m sorry. I just couldn’t get to you a second earlier.”
Vera knew he was lying, and then considered the fact that she was cheating with his boss, and relented, “Okay, okay, fine. Just go finish the shoot and come back. How’s my replacement working out?”
Jermaine let go a heavy sigh of relief realizing that he had been holding his breath, “We haven’t met yet. Maybe later today or tomorrow. Don’t worry, she can’t hope to compare. I’m just looking forward to getting it over with.”
“I’m sorry it’s not the pleasureful shoot you expected, darling. I know how you hate having to pose new models, break them in, and do your job. If you wrap it up quickly, I’ll make it worth your while,” Vera offered invitingly.
Jermaine smiled despite himself when a man entered and interrupted them, “¡Ejem! Hola. Ahem! Hello there,” he said, searching to extract his card from his pocket.
“Vera, I have to go. I’ll call you later.”
Jermaine hung up and addressed the gentleman, “Hello. I’m sorry to intrude. I thought the building was vacant.”
“It is,” he said, a little perplexed, “Lucas Fox, Realtor,” he introduced himself offering his card.
Jermaine took the card and asked, “Is there an apartment nearby for rent or sale?”
“Yes, there are several apartments for sale and rent in this area, they are a bit expensive, but the location, the views and the amenities are worth it”.
“Would you know of a furnished apartment in a quiet area,” Jermaine inquired.
“There is only one in La Xerea, but it’s a penthouse. You would have to move fast. It’s a coveted neighborhood. It has drawn a lot of attention,” Lucas answered.
“How much,” Jermaine asked.
Lucas answered, “1,000 €uros per month.”
Lucas’ eyes flew open wide when Jermaine replied, “I’ll take it. Can we start the paperwork tonight?”
“Yes, of course,” Lucas couldn’t conceal his excitement.
“Excellent. Bring it to Hotel Balneario Las Arenas in Valencia tonight at 9:00 PM”
“I will, Lucas smiled, “This is going to be the easiest sale I’ve ever made.”
Jermaine shook his hand and thanked him, grateful that some of the best ideas are borne of mishaps and accidents.
He left the building with a plan taking shape and was cautiously optimistic, though he knew that this plan was an enormous gamble and that it lacked a solid foundation. Jermaine knew he would have to build the foundation with every step he took.
He went directly to a jeweler not far from the hotel and had her ring sized. Then he surveyed their selection of engagement rings and wedding bands.
Jermaine splurged for a taxi back to the hotel and returned with his photography equipment, ready to go to work. Finally, he felt strong and vital. He knew what he was living for and that was all he needed. I’m strong enough to face anything, he thought jubilantly, Hey life, bring it!
He breezed through large portions of the shoot, capturing a cruise ship as big as a city, beachfront properties, art and sculptures. Then he moved indoors for the finale, beginning with setting the scene inside the City of Arts and Sciences in the Oceanogràfic de Valencia, the second largest aquarium in the world.
With the scene set perfectly, Jermaine picked up his camera and approached the model who would replace Vera. There stood his naked beauty clad in a string bikini. and about ten pounds of makeup. Jermaine rolled his eyes, yelling, “Wait! Stop! What the hell is wrong with the makeup artist,” he asked angrily, moving closer to a model he didn’t recognize until her frightened eyes eyes met his obvious annoyance.
